Katelyn James – The Workshop Experience

Last weekend I had the absolute pleasure of attending a wedding photography workshop like no other with fellow photographers, many who had come from interstate to just be there. Katelyn James is one of the photographers who I draw a lot of inspiration from and when the opportunity for me to get to meet and learn from her came, I jumped at it, especially since she was coming all the way from Virginia in the US to us in Adelaide! How lucky are we?

I was the only male attending so I was a little nervous when I walked into the house where we’d be spending the next two days. All those nerves and concerns disappeared when Katelyn called out to me and gave me a big hug! Katelyn’s honesty and generosity was evident in how she shared all of her knowledge and experience with us. The atmosphere was relaxed, I honestly felt I was just catching up with friends while being inspired and totally blown away at all the things we were learning. We shared in many laughs during breaks and meal times. I’m talking real laughter here and I’m grinning to myself just thinking back :D We had an exciting shoot styled by Gabrielle Walsh and I literally gasped at how amazing everything looked. Hopefully sometime in the near future I’ll share those photos with you all! Speaking of the shoot, here’s a photo of Katelyn demonstrating a pose out on the sand dunes.

On the way back from the beach I grabbed a few photos of Katelyn and her husband Michael walking back to the house. If you’re wondering, that’s Katelyn’s bag that Michael’s wearing, what can I say? He’s an awesome husband!

:)
There are so many things I could draw on to say that I’d benefitted from during the workshop, but there are two things that stand out and were reinforced for me. The experience that a client has with a photographer and the reason why I am a wedding photographer. Meeting likeminded people who can share with you what they do to make the client experience the best it can be was invaluable. Hearing them also say why they choose to be wedding photographers and knowing that I too share the same reasons is empowering and inspirational.

When I left their house late on Sunday evening, saying our farewells and going home I wished Katelyn and Michael didn’t have to leave. We all came with the purpose of meeting and learning from them, but we gained so much more. I’m excited to see what the future will bring now that I have been inspired even more and given strategies in which to achieve my goals, I can’t wait to shoot my next wedding!

If you ever get the chance to attend a workshop by Katelyn James or if you’re a bride looking for a wedding photographer, do whatever you need to do and book these guys. They’re such lovely people, their photography is amazing and it’ll be one of those decisions you’ll look back feeling so glad you made.

Thank you Katelyn and Michael, you’re welcome back anytime!
